Hakuin made it his business to make sure that Rinzai practice became much stricter than it had previously been, and, through his own force of character and his writings, he attracted a large number of students drawn by his uncompromising nature and his reputation for rigor.

Indeed, so successful was he that his students began to occupy the majority of important positions in Rinzai monasteries throughout Japan. Other rival lineages within Rinzai died out during the Tokugawa period, and today all Rinzai monks trace their lineage back to Hakuin. He is therefore seen as the father of present-day Rinzai.
