Because of the war, however, the event did not attract much attention abroad. Jensen definitely appreciated having been awarded the Nobel Prize and expressed a certain amount of pride and self-esteem in his banquet speech in Stockholm; but he was not dependent on the money, and the award did not have any visible impact on his personal life or his writing.
Neither did it contribute to increase his reputation abroad, which had reached its zenith in the interwar years, particularly in Germany and the Scandinavian countries; he never became a popular writer in the Anglo-American countries. After an operation in September he managed to finish a book about the great explorers, Afrika: Opdagelserejserne , Africa: Journeys of Discovery , demonstrating that one of the favorite topics of his childhood reading was still inspiring him.
