He played for the Hurricanes starting with the Super 12's inception in and took over the captaincy in Graham Henry named him as All Blacks captain in ; under his leadership the All Blacks won 19 of their 21 games including the clean sweep of the British and Irish Lions and the Grand Slam in At the end of , after 74 Test caps, Umaga retired from international rugby.
Umaga played four games in for the Wellington Lions in the Air New Zealand Cup, to play matches for the province, before taking up the position of coach at Toulon. Umaga returned to a playing role for Toulon in the second half of that season, and at the same time announced that he would not continue as head coach beyond that season. Umaga unfortunately missed virtually the entire Rugby Union World Cup, after being injured in a freak collision with teammate Carlos Spencer in the opening match against Italy. He suffered a damaged posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and was forced to leave the field, not returning for the remainder of the tournament, which saw the All Blacks eliminated in the semi-finals by the Wallabies.
However, his next outing for the All Blacks was as their captain, after he was selected to replace Reuben Thorne, becoming the first New Zealander of Pacific Islander heritage to captain the All Blacks. Tana is contracted to the Wellington rugby union to , so in the coming two years we hope to see many more devestating runs and big hits from the Samoan assasin and hopefully he will find some glory in the black jersey of New Zealand.
