This album is a testament to their unique artistic synergy, rooted in the American jazz tradition, but with unmistakably European flair. Drawing from a shared musical vocabulary developed during their year collaboration, Baas and van Gelder effortlessly navigate a diverse range of moods and atmospheres. Four deeply authentic musicians - each of them admired greatly by the duo - make a guest appearance on 'This Is Water'.

Baas and van Gelder wrote new music for each of them specifically. These tailor-made songs are intended as vehicles for expression that cater to the strengths of each guest, with a focus on improvisation. Ben decided early to pursue music, and he performed with and studied with many well-known musicians from the Netherlands. He learned from jazz legends Lee Konitz, Mark Turner and others.

Ben formed his own band at the Jazz Gallery in , which is a place that serves as a creative hub for many of the most innovative improvising musicians today. This performance was the start of a long-standing relationship with the club, which has allowed him to experiment and mix with other groups and repertoire over the years.
